Life in Bethany Beach, Delaware
When arriving in Bethany Beach from the north, you will cross the picturesque Indian River Inlet Bridge, spanning the channel where the Indian River Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. Locked in place by the United States Army Corps of Engineers after many years of “drifting” from one area to the next, the Indian River Inlet is a popular summertime spot for thousands of residents and visitors. With Delaware Seashore State Park, the Indian River Marina, Hammerheads Dockside restaurant and many other options at or near the inlet, this is an area enjoyed by the masses when the weather turns warm and attention turns to outdoor activities.
Visitors to Bethany Beach are welcomed to town by “Chief Little Owl,” a 24-foot Indian totem pole that stands at the entrance to the resort’s downtown area. On site since 1976, the current statue is the third to grace the entrance to the town. It has become a trademark of the resort and is well-known throughout the region for its symbolism and welcoming nature. Bethany’s boardwalk offers plenty of options for those coming to the resort for a vacation getaway. Restaurants, family shops and small eateries line the western edge of the boardwalk, which also offers plenty of access points for visitors to enter the town’s beautiful beachfront area.
Ranging from seafood restaurants like Off the Hook, Bluecoast, and Matt’s Fish Camp to dining options like 14 Global, Pie, The Cottage Café and perhaps the area’s most popular barbecue restaurant, Bethany Blues, the “Quiet Resorts” have a little bit of everything for everyone when it comes to dining. Summertime activities in Bethany Beach include weekly concerts at the town’s bandstand near the boardwalk, evening movies on the beach, a bustling farmers’ market and plenty of fun-filled activities in the sun. Bethany’s most popular festivals include the annual Fourth of July celebration and the autumn Seaside Craft Show, held on the boardwalk each September and featuring dozens of quality artisans in many different specialties.
